Who Was Anna Mani?

Many people didn’t know that she was the first woman ever to be a scientist from India. Anna contributed too many things to science and lightened many topics. Anna Mani was born on the 23rd of 1918 in a small town in Kerala Perrmade. It was revealed that she belonged to a Syrian Christian family and her father was a civil engineer. Her parents shared 8 children and she was more than 7 siblings. Anna had a great interest in dance but she chose physics and pursued her career in science getting a degree in B.Sc in physics and chemistry. She received honours from Chennai’s Pachaiyappas college in 1939 which is currently Madras.

Anne was a part of the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore which got through her scholarship, she was also enrolled in Imperial College of London back in 1945 where she had her graduation in physics. Though she was having her degree in physics she shifted to meteorological equipment. Many might have heard and read about CV Raman, and his laws, well, Anne worked with her on the characteristics of Diamonds and Ruby. Though Anne tried hard to get a PhD she was denied the degree and didn’t get her seat. In 1948 she joined the meteorology department in Pune where she did a number of studies on meteorological equipment. She also took care of the British meteorological equipment.

Anna Mani: Research, Discoveries & Inventions

Anna was a part of many scientific organizations like the World Metrological organization and the Indian National Science academy. She was awarded INSA K. R. Ramanathan Medal in 1987. She worked as the IMD Deputy general director in 1976. Though Mani worked a lot in her profession and established a good career, she chose to be single and did not get married. She suffered a stroke in 1994 and after hitting the age of 83 she passed away on the 16th of August 2001, in Thiruvananthapuram.
